Draft Horse Work Day
June 19th 2010
Draft Horse Work Day at Black Bell Acres
Please bring your team of draft animals. We have a wagon and two forecarts to hook up to. We can skid some logs.
It’s a potluck, so please bring a dish to pass around. Let’s have a fun day here at the farm.
Bring your friends. Anybody interested in draft horses,
mules, oxen, etc. is welcome.
Directions:
We are off P Hwy between Alton and Rover in Oregon County.
Look for County Rd 314 on the south side of P Hwy and turn (look for the Cover Memorial Wildlife Area signs). Go 1 mile until the street curves to the left, but instead of turning, keep going straight despite the private drive sign up the little hill. You will see a yellow house with a red pole barn to your right. There are German Shepherds in kennels right near the front gate.
We hope to see you there.
For more information, call Kirsten at 417-778-6009

Rainy Day for Horse Logger
April 24, the scheduled field demonstration day for Ira King, turned out to have unexpectedly bad weather. Many of the people who had expressed an interest in the event were unable to attend.
Eight guests did show up, plus Ira King, the local horse logger. A private forester attended and discussed the methods of determining the age of standing timber.
Ira uses a d-ring harness which keeps the weight off the horses neck. He also uses a logging cart he built himself. At this demonstration, Ira used Kirsten and Al's draft horses and his own harness.
The demonstrations took place between thundershowers. Roger Lee cut the selected trees, and Ira and the team skidded the logs.
We plan to have another demo in the fall because we had so much interest this time. Hopefully, the weather will be more cooperative!
Thank you to all who attended!
In other news, we have a new Secretary for the Ozarks Draft Horse Association. Margie Paskert has agreed to take on the position. Thank you, Margie!
Ira King's Suffolk mare had a colt named Hickory this spring. The sire is Suffolk/American Saddlebred stallion.

Field Day for Horse Logging and Forestry
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Horse Logging and Forestry Management Day Scheduled in Oregon County Alton, MO (April 8, 2010) – The Ozarks Draft Horse Association has announced the scheduling of a Horse Logging Demonstration and Forestry Management Day at Black Bell Acres outside of Alton in Oregon County on Saturday, April 24, 2010, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The event is free to the public.
Demonstrating horse logging will be Ira King, who has been logging exclusively with horses since 1993. Mr. King states that, “Horse logging is a good option for folks who care about their land, because horses are gentle on the ground.
Steve Peas, from the Missouri Department of Conservation will probably be on hand to answer questions about forestry management. Kirsten Kosinski, Vice President of the Ozarks Draft Horse Association and owner of Black Bell Acres, states, “It is important for land owners to talk to Steve, or another forester from the Department of Conservation, before having their land logged. A forester can tell you which trees have value and what the long term impacts of removing certain trees will be. He can help you develop a plan.”
The Ozarks Draft Horse Association promotes the use of draft animals, including horses, oxen, mules, etc, for work and pleasure. Monthly meetings often include demonstrations and educational activities. For more information about the Association, contact Kirsten Kosinski.
Black Bell Acres, owned by Al and Kirsten Kosinski, is a diversified farm that raises milk goats, grass fed lamb, Scottish Highland cattle, and more. Al and Kirsten also own a pair of Percheron draft horses.
Black Bell Acres is located on County Rd. 314, off of P Hwy, in Oregon County, between Alton and Rover., by the Cover Memorial Wildlife Area sign. Call Kirsten (417-778-6009) for directions and more information.

Interesting "Stuff"
Kirsten, Al, and their team did some log pulling recently, with the assistance of a couple of guests.
From Kirsten's email:
We had a little log skidding here at the farm.
Ira King the horselogger came out, and we all took turns driving.
Here is a picture of Ron Lennington (student driver) pulling a large log.

Here's a link to a discussion board about draft horses:

Minutes of February Meeting
Ozarks Draft Horse Association Meeting Minutes
February 27, 2010
Jim and Lora McCabe’s House
Mammoth Springs, AK
Attendance: Kirsten Kosinski, Vice President, Margie Paskert, Secretary/Treasurer, and members Steve Driscoll, Mike Moore, Joanna Burgin, Ira King, Jim Mc Cabe, Lora Mc Cabe, Ron Lennington. Guests: Jenny Underwood and two sons, Matt Driscoll
Meeting Opened by: Kirsten Kosinski at 1:50 PM
Secretary's Report: Margie Paskert is the new Secretary/Treasurer and did not yet have anything to report.
President’s Report: Dennis Goodall was unable to attend.
Steve Driscoll conveyed several messages from Dennis.
1. The club currently does not have a checking account and needs one. Steve suggested that Dennis, Kirsten, Steve, and possibly Margie should all be signers on the account. Only one signature would be required on checks. Bank of Thayer would probably be our best bet as it has branches in Thayer, West Plains, and Alton, which is convenient for all potential signers.
2. The club currently has approximately $500 collected from dues.
Old Business: None.
New Business: Steve Driscoll also conveyed that Dennis is willing to build a wagon for the club. He can get running gears for $125 - $150. Dennis would provide the labor at no cost. The club would pay for all materials. It was not clear exactly how much the materials would cost. The wagon would have our name on it and could be used by members for parades, etc. The idea was put to vote and passed unanimously.
Kirsten asked for volunteers for homes for future meetings. April’s meeting is already set at Al and Kirsten Kosinski’s house. Ira King will be demonstrating logging with his horses. Joanna Burgin volunteered her home for the March meeting, but after some discussion it was decided that the McCabes would host the March meeting again as they are located more centrally.
Ideas for future meetings were called for. Inviting a 4H club or a homeschool group was suggested. Having speakers and/or demonstrations, like harnessing, were also suggested.
There is going to be a coggins clinic in Salem on March 13.
Meeting Adjourned at: Approximately 3 PM.
Please Note! There will be no March meeting of the Ozarks Draft Horse Association. Stay tuned for an announcement of the April meeting date, time, and location.
