Draft Horse Work Day

June 19th 2010

Draft Horse Work Day at Black Bell Acres

Please bring your team of draft animals. We have a wagon and two forecarts to hook up to. We can skid some logs.

It’s a potluck, so please bring a dish to pass around. Let’s have a fun day here at the farm.

Bring your friends. Anybody interested in draft horses,
mules, oxen, etc. is welcome.

Directions:

We are off P Hwy between Alton and Rover in Oregon County.
Look for County Rd 314 on the south side of P Hwy and turn (look for the Cover Memorial Wildlife Area signs). Go 1 mile until the street curves to the left, but instead of turning, keep going straight despite the private drive sign up the little hill. You will see a yellow house with a red pole barn to your right. There are German Shepherds in kennels right near the front gate.

We hope to see you there.

Rainy Day for Horse Logger

April 24, the scheduled field demonstration day for Ira King, turned out to have unexpectedly bad weather. Many of the people who had expressed an interest in the event were unable to attend.

Eight guests did show up, plus Ira King, the local horse logger. A private forester attended and discussed the methods of determining the age of standing timber.

Ira uses a d-ring harness which keeps the weight off the horses neck. He also uses a logging cart he built himself. At this demonstration, Ira used Kirsten and Al's draft horses and his own harness.

The demonstrations took place between thundershowers. Roger Lee cut the selected trees, and Ira and the team skidded the logs.

We plan to have another demo in the fall because we had so much interest this time. Hopefully, the weather will be more cooperative!

Thank you to all who attended!

In other news, we have a new Secretary for the Ozarks Draft Horse Association. Margie Paskert has agreed to take on the position. Thank you, Margie!

Ira King's Suffolk mare had a colt named Hickory this spring. The sire is Suffolk/American Saddlebred stallion.
